Beautiful Magical Cookies

(Inspired by Marsha; adapted from a recipe published in Quick Cooking May/June 2004, p40).

1 Tube (18ounces) refrigerated sugar cookie dough
     2 to 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
     Gel food coloring

Cut cookie dough in half.  Let one half stand at room temperature for 5-10 minutes to soften (save the other half for another use). On a lightly floured surface, knead 1-2 tablespoons of flour into remaining dough until dough is stiff.  Press into a 5 inch circle.  Top with one dot of food coloring. (We used red, blue, green for one and then used purple, pink, green for another.)  Knead the dough 5-10 times or until the color just begins to swirl.  Be careful not to knead the dough too much.

Roll out dough to 1/8inch thickness. Cut out with a floured leaf-shaped cookie cutter. Have your child use his or her imagination as to where to place the cookie cutter to create a colorful cookie. Place 1 inch apart on ungreased baking sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 10-13 minutes or until edges are slightly browned.  Cool for 2 minutes before removing to wire racks.  Repeat with remaining dough. Have fun and enjoy your beautiful cookies.

More Ideas

1.  Draw a leaf.  Identify a value or character trait that you think is important.  Color your leaf.
2.  Write a cinquain or Haiku poem about an illustration in The Magical Journey.
3.  Write about a friend who is helping you grow.
